Mentoring
Sign up for the Mentoring Program!
The Mizzou ADVANCE mentoring program matches STEM faculty with more senior faculty and administrators for career guidance and professional development. The aim is to help both mentors and mentees by fostering one-to-one connections, improving social networks, encouraging research collaboration, and sharing "best practices" across departments.
Mentoring pairs may consist of individuals from different but related departments. Similarly, pairs may consist of individuals at different levels. For example, an associate professor in chemistry might be paired with a full professor in physics. In 2009/10, the program is open to faculty at the assistant, associate and full professor levels. This is an expansion of the original program, which included associate and full professors. Also in 2009/2010, the program is expanding to additional departments to provide more faculty an opportunity to participate in the program.
In addition to facilitating one-on-one relationships, the Mentoring Program also offers professional development seminars to faculty. During the seminars and workshops participants can network with others in the mentoring program while also discussing topics such as leadership, negotiation, and communication.
Both women and men can get involved in the mentoring program by serving as mentors or choosing to receive mentoring. While the aim of Mizzou ADVANCE is to help women's advancement, we know that mentoring will improve the working environment for all faculty.
The program is modeled after a program at New Mexico State University.
